Napa Valley may not be what it is today if it was for Robert Mondavi. Mondavi, the son of two Italian immigrants, was born in Minnesota and moved to Lodi, California (just east of San Francisco) for high school. His family eventually purchased the Charles Krug vineyard in Napa which is were started to work vineyards. Once he found his love for wine he was determined to put Napa wines on the map. Eventually he would buy the To Kalon Vineyard located in the heart of the Napa Valley.

This winery/vineyard is located just off of CA 29 and is hard to miss with its stunning architecture and multiple art pieces. As you pull in you will drive by some of the Mondavid vines that lead you to the fountain that sits directly in front of the entrance. Once parked you can walk your way through the vines if you so chose and under the arch towards the court yard. Once in the court yard you will be accompanied by stunning views of the Mayacamas Mountain range. To the left is the tasting bar and restaurant and to the right is the wine and gift shop. This is a production which comes with some pros and cons. As for the cons it is not as quant and can make you feel inconsequential at times. As for the pros this winery is large and provides multiple tasting opportunities. Whether you would like one glass of wine or a full tasting you can get that and everything in between and no reservations are required unless you would like a tour.

  • While we were at the Mondavi Winery we were able to get to taste the 50th Anniversary Maestro Bordeaux Blend. To be honest for the 50th Anniversary we did expect a little more on this one. Deep ruby in color with medium intensity, this wine had notes of blackberry, plum, dark fruits, and chocolate. The oak flavors came in a little heavy with vanilla, and toasted oak.
