We love visiting wineries and Mayacamas has been on our list for a long time with their long history of highly rated, age worthy wines that only seem to get better every year. On this trip we were trying to go to the Mt. Veeder Vineyard but couldn’t make it with time, so we decided to have a tasting in their Downtown Napa tasting room. Right in the heart of the town off of 1st Street sits the Mayacamas Tasting Room.

There is an indoor and outdoor setting at this location. The outdoor tends to be a bit hot in the summer months so it is recommended to sit inside if possible, during this time. They offered two tasting options, a current release tasting and a vertical tasting. We ended up splitting both of them.

The current release tasting came with three wines: Chardonnay, Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon. The vertical tasting offered up three vintages of the Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon: the ’03, the ’05 and the ’14. The ’03 and ’05 were the favorites from the tasting with the ’05 being our absolute favorite by a slim margin. Fresh lit match, flint, black raspberry, tobacco, cedar box, blackberry, and sour cherry a well-represented in this wine. A strong tannin structure was still present even with it being 15 years old, the acidity was still high being that it is mountain fruit.
