While on our way to the Walla Walla Valley from Seattle we decided we wanted to hit up one winery in the Yakima Valley as we were passing through and boy did we hit a winner. Directly off of Interstate 82 just south of Yakima are three wineries. Being that we have a love for Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah we decided to end up at Owen Roe where we greeted by our gracious host Ashley. During our tasting she explained that they originally started their production in Oregon and continued it here in the Yakima Valley. The winery was started in 1999 by David and Angelica O’Reilly, both with deep Irish heritage that can be seen throughout their bottle art. Each bottle depicts a different seen that goes along with the wine in the bottle. When you visit make sure to ask for the stories behind the pictures as they are some of the most entertaining we have heard in a long time and add a sense of character to this place.

As you turn off of I-82 you head to the east towards Treveri Cellars a great sparkling wine producer. Follow the signs through the vineyards and along the gravel driveway to the large red barn in the distance. Once you make you pull into the winery you are met with sweeping views of the surrounding area that boast vineyard sites for as far as the eye can see. The tasting room and bar are situated inside the barrel room so make sure to bring a sweatshirt or jacker, blankets are provided as well. Sundays they have live music and seated tasting outside, be careful though because it can get windy.

Out tasting included a total of six wines which included the Crawford Beck Pinot Gris, Lady Rosa Red, Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Willow Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Sinister Hand and Cabernet Franc. Out of the bunch the favorite was the Red Willow Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Notes of black cherry, tobacco leaf, hot chocolate, mocha, and bruised black plum. High tannins, high acid, a nice balance and good structure make this wine a winner.
